The National Kite Month Poster contest is only a few days from closing. The Poster will be used by schools and in other public places to promote festivals during the celebration in April. Check out the article for kiting magazine and get to work. In the past a favorite Kiting photo was used with the required text added. Just ask Mike how we made WHATADUCK famous around the world.
While we are at it how about starting to line up activities to promote kiting in your area. Kevin can help point you in the right direction or you can contact the Committee using the link on the NKM site. Last year region 7 had a total of Zero workshops and 4 kite events listed on the site. Im sure we missed a few that did not get registered during the month. This year It should be no problem to have a huge increase over the past numbers under new leadership. From a simple kite safety display using the professor kite booklet and a few of your favorite kite pictures posted in the local library or school to having the club fun fly and inviting the public to picnic and join you flying kites. Each is an activity and it puts you one step closer to growing the membership of your local club and of course the AKA.

Have you ever had a chance to talk to the Govenors Secretary. Well, its kinda cool to get a package from the office with an official signature. I have made it so simple even a ..........can do it. I will let you fill in the blank. Just for the record I was thinking computer savey 7 year old.
You start off by logging into the NKM site and selecting believe it or not the tab that says Proclamation. The page will open and give you all kinds of interesting information. Best of all toward the middle is a link to download a proclamation kit. When you open it up yo will find a cover letter and instructions. (Please note that the dates are wrong and I will have that corrected soon or you can edit it before sending it in.) You can go online to get the Governors name since some changes with the election and then call the office and ask how to request a proclamation or look for a link on the governors website. From there its a simple matter of filling in the blanks as explained on the instruction sheet and sending it in. Most require a 45-60 day advanced notice. Then you wait for the mail to send you a giant envelope with your proclamation. You can also use the same kit to make the request on a local level. Generally the instructions are the same except you can request to have it mailed, Pick it up since its local and only takes a few days or the best way is request a Photo Opp. If that is approved you will be invited to drop by a council meeting or the Mayors etc office and have a picture taken as part of a formal presentation. Of course you bring a small kite to hold and call the local paper or submit a copy of the picture to them. By the way the presentaion is an event you can list and if its in the paper you can advertise that the club flys the third Sat at the park or whatever you need to promote your club.
One interesting twist that a teacher/AKA member Jeff Monteith does is to invite the Mayor to the school during kite day. His class makes kites etc and then the Mayor gets pictures with the kids preseting the kite month proclamation advertising thier kite day. Most local leaders love to have thier picture in the paper with smiling kids and a feel good story. As with all of the NKM activities drop me a note if you have any questions.
PS> We are working on prizes for a random drawing of all the Proclamations entered.
