Re: Who is FLying on Long Island ?
Thats the way I feel in HOUSTON TX. I sometimes fly a show kite on a thin strip of park land along the bayou ( creek- small river) that has a large Boulevard running along both sides in the late afternoon. Its great to hear the horns honk and people wave. A second before they saw the kites they were tired from a long day at work and not excited about the drive home in traffic then a few seconds later they flash a smile and wave. Of course I have my AKA sign up where they can see it. Even with all that we still have only a couple of dozen members in one of the top five cities in the country.
PS> No crashes yet but we did have a 100 kite arch break away and cause a slight panic. My past experience as a traffic cop helped me calmly stop traffic on all six lanes as the kites drifted over the street. We then pulled the kites out of the street without damage other than the broken line. ( We don't fly the arch downtown now)

Why don't you check with the local kiters? There are many AKA members on Long Island. You can look them up in the E-Directory. Also, the AKA lists one Merchant Member there. Check with them to see if they know local kiters or sponsor local events:

Hey Todd...
There might be people listed in the directory, but there's no one actually out flying on the beaches. And the 'Unlimited Sky' ? Dead web link, no call back on the phone. Looking forward to seeing you in Wildwood !

I fly at field 6 at Jones beach. I am extremely new to this but it would be great to go flying sometime. Lets set something up. I am free just about everyday.

Re: Who is FLying on Long Island ?
I've flown at field 6, in the off season. It's gotta be nuts down there this time of year. Any public beaches are pretty bad unless you get there real early or real late. I fly at Bald Hill (exit 63) a lot this time of year to avoid the crowds. Are there others that fly down there with you ? What do you fly ? I fly mostly 2 line, but I fly 1,2,3,and 4 line when the mood hits.
Here's my favorite thing about field 6...

Re: Who is FLying on Long Island ?
OK, it's time to resurrect this old topic. I'm still trying to find some kite flyers on Long Island. It would be great to get a group together and fly some of the best wind in the country.
Smooth winds from Region 1 1/2.

It's April...
Anyone interested in putting together a fun fly for Kite Month ? It's a good time, before they start checking beach stickers & charging admission...
