Starting a Kite flying Club
Starting a Kite flying Club
Greetings From Branson Mo , First post here .
I have long been a fan of kite flying . I have a 2 line stunt and 4 line 4 meter tractor . However I dont get much time to fly , due to weather and work not cooperating mostly. And this year so far has been totally crazy weather wise .
I also like the bigger kites , yea , like Paragliders !
Kiting them is something every true blue kite flyer should experaince at least once in their life time . Quite possibly the ultimate in kite flying . If you get good at Kitting it , you have your own personal anti gravity machine
Its an art form all its own, and something you dont want to miss if you get the opportunity to watch or even to participate in.
Now , I dont exactly know why , but maybe its where I fly , but when I fly , I'm totally alone? No one bothers me , or even comes by to ask questions . But its an ideal spot Sloping to the south wind and entirely open . But as yet I'm the only one to fly here ? . So maybe I need to fly in more populated areas to get interests up . And Its a given here in the Ozarks that we dont have the constant beach winds to help us out , and areas are limited . But we do have several parks along the lake to get smooth air . So maybe that is where I need to start my recruitment and take the big wing to stir things up a little . Is there any other way to gather the sparse kite flyers . ? Maybe a posting on Craigslist ? Open to suggestions Thanks !

Re: Starting a Kite flying Club
This is a great place to begin! What are you doing May 22 & 23? If not much, head over to Joplin MO for a great festival! You will have an opportunity to meet some people that live close by, well, anyway closer! We'll be flying on the old race track. For more details, contact Greg Begey [gbegey-at-hotmail.com]
When you go out, take some small kites with you and share. Pass out cards with your name, phone & email. Think about setting up some sort of schedule, like the 3rd sunday of every month so folks know where/when to find you.
Contact your local newspaper and suggest they come out for some photos. Craigs list? Why not? Heck, it's free! Also, maybe set up a face book page, or at least blasting all your friends with updates.
Keep posting here and let us know how it goes.
And, come introduce yourself if you make it to Joplin. I'll be there. Richard Dermer, past AKA prez will be there. Lots of others too.

Re: Starting a Kite flying Club
Just in from Greg, more info about the field. Oh, and there is a special kiteflyers rate at La Quinta.
The "new" field, is the HUGE grass parking lot, east side of the old Route 66 Speedway, located west
of 7th and Shifferdecker. Entrance will be off of 7th Street, on the east side of Carousel Park, which
would be the park maintenance entrance. SIGNS WILL BE POSTED IN FRONT.
Will be using a flying area just about the same size that we have had for the past 2 years. Field is on
the top of a hill, so winds should be good.
Parks & Rec. Department is going to mow for us, CVB will have porta-potties on site. NOTE: There is
no electricity on site.
Again, the "new" field is directly south (3/4 to 1 mile as the crow flies) of the old field. The street address
is:
3834 West 7th Street, Joplin, MO 64801
For those of you that can GOOGLE EARTH, look it up. More info later.

Re: Starting a Kite flying Club
question -- received a mail to "profile" our kite club on the website -- anybody know how and where to do this in the AKA site ?? it wasn't readily clear in the e-mail as i received it. Our club is small but has been here a long time -- would love to have club "register" with a profile on the AKA site --

Go to the "About the AKA" tab at the top - scroll down to the "Join Us" tab - then scroll down to the "Affiliated Kite Clubs" tab. Click on that and you will get to a page with a link for the affiliated kite clubs application.
There is also a link at the bottom of the page that takes you to the regional map - and then on to a listing of local clubs. The listing is contact information and direct links to club websites.
