Favorite Central U.S. Midwest Kite Festivals
Favorite Central U.S. Midwest Kite Festivals
Since it is the end of the year, and we are all planning our vacation days for next year, wouldn’t it be great to know everyone’s favorite kite events in Region 7 and the Midwest?
Most of us know about the major festivals like Antelope Island Utah, Callaway Nebraska, Grinnell, Iowa, Jamestown, North Dakota,
I am sure there are some events we have never heard of. We need to hear more about those. They don’t have to be listed in any particular order. Please send your list of Favorite Central U.S. Kite events to ROBIN rd7@aka.kite.org then I can forward the answers to Linda Larkey, whom I thank for suggesting this
It may start some conversations, Linda and Randy Larkey often discuss events for a couple of years before a time pops up to attend. Knowing about an event is over half the battle. We have tons of small events that we don’t know of. Anything kite related, preferably in the Midwest, Region 7, or 6.
Examples are,

You don't have to have attended them to list them. You can even send us a "Wish List" since you never know when we'll get a municipality willing to "comp" kitefliers to travel to their festival! I try to mention that now and then to festival committees and Chambers of Commerce who may have an extra buck or two allocated to promote a kite festival.
I'm also posting this to the Region 7 page on Facebook

Also, please let me know if you're starting up a new festival or club in Region 7. I WILL HELP YOU PROMOTE IT. We have some Kiters in the Missouri area, Branson, Joplin, and Springfield, looking for kiters to fly with, and are interested in starting another club and some new kite festivals!

Re: Favorite Central U.S. Midwest Kite Festivals
We should have a couple more events here in UT/ID after winter. The bigger one that shuld prove to be a great kite festival is on the ID side of Bear Lake. You mentioned Idaho Kite Festival (this would be Miki's festival but there is also Kiting Just for fun in Idaho Falls). Keep in mind that ID is in region 9, not 6 or 7 (Hey, I think ID should be in region 7 but that is another story).
UT will also be having another kite festival this summer (sometime in Sept) that shoudl be pretty good. The location is not pristine (like Bear Lake) but it's going to be an actual kite festival and the hosts _really_ want to make this a big kite event. As we get closer to that time (i.e. it's no longer 20 degrees out) I will have more info. The odd thing about this festival is that the best place to have it amounted to a "dirt" field". It's really not bad but it's not grass or sand. But it's huge and let me tell you... if the wind is blowing any place.... it's blowing at this location! Nothing to block the wind for miles and miles and people will be able to see the kites for miles!
The Utah Kite Fliers will also be havnig a small kite workshop, probably in Feb 2012 and will be maknig MAKR bols. Should be a lot of fun!

I'd like to throw in a mention for the Twisted Lines festival in Topeka, KS each June. Always a lot of fun.

While on the subjest of Utah events, Antelope Island will be Aug 31, sept 1 and 2 in 2012, labor Day Week end. This is proving to be the largest thing happening in Region 7 and promises to be even bigger in 2012 with an expanded schools program, more kite fliers, and a gemeral all around great time.
for 2012, there are a couple elements in the works that will be offically announce after the new year starts, promises to be really big and really good.........

We are extending the event this coming year, unoffically for the kite fliers, Mon, Tues and Weds. Kite Stock will be a decompress and hang out on the island for the kite fliers. Fly if you want or not, just have fun.....
