Building your own kites doesn't necessarily require sewing. There are new sew taping options for ripstop. And a whole world full of options in both tradtiional materials (bamboo, paper, etc.) and modern materials (tyvek) that don't require sewing.
But learning to sew is not that difficult. And for me it replaced constantly searching for new kites to buy - with a couple of months of building.
