ROCKFISH VALLEY KITE FLYING FESTIVAL, APRIL 11, 2009, THE SATURDAY BEFORE EASTER 10:00 AM UNTIL 3:00 PM SPRUCE CREEK PARK in the big field off Glenthorne Loop (RT 627) FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC Kite demonstrations and competitions courtesy of members of Richmond Air Force, a professional organization of kite flyers. Some performances are done to music. Noon unfurling of 1200 square foot flag by children in attendance with playing of Star Spangled Banner.11 AM and 1 PM free dual line group lessons lasting ½ hour. Stunt kites flown, instructions given, and kites can be purchased from 2 Guys Flying. Children activities include free kites and assembly to first 100 children; basket races with parachutes. From areas east and northeast:Follow Route 29 south to I-64 west to Exit 107 (Crozet, Route 250). Take Route 250 west 5 miles to Route 151 south, turn left. Follow Route 151 south 13 miles to Route 6627. Turn left at Wintergreen Country Store and the Spruce Creek Park is on your left. From areas west, northwest, and southwest:Take Route 29 north just north of Amherst to Route 151 north, turn left. Follow Route 151 for 22.5 miles to Route 627. There are a number of restaurants within 1 mile, also the Devil's Backbone Brewery, Wintergreen Winery, The Rockfish Valley Trails with birding, streams and spectacular mountain and valley views and Wintergreen Resort. This is one of the most spectacular valleys in all of Virginia. Surrounded by historic homes and farms. A number of bed and breakfast locations are within several miles.
