[Various] Well, this is a little different! I was interested in getting some northwest fliers to come out of the rain this winter, so I thought this would be good way to do that with something other than line touch. Good chances to toughen up your flying skills in two challenging locations. I don’t mean to scare anyone away, but these places can be very challenging to fly and beginners might have problems. Expect to lose some kites! Sunset Cliffs is a challenging place to fly; smooth ocean winds (usually light), but where we’ll be you’ll have the challenge to fly in and out of water, through waves, around corners, and into a cave! Of course all this depends on the exact direction of the wind (and size of the surf!!). Plan on flying kites that can get wet and that you won’t mind losing. The location is quite small, so we might have to take turns with it. Bathroom facilities are uncertain, but the parking area is very close so driving to a facility shouldn’t be a problem (less than 2 minutes away). Joshua Tree National Park is a popular climbing area and is quite scenic. 2.5 to 3 hours away from San Diego. The only clear place to fly will be on the rocks!! Well, there might be some roadways we can use, but I think the challenge will be to find good places to fly with the cleanest wind available (which probably won’t be much). Don’t worry, you won’t have to rack up with climbing gear to get a good place to fly; there are plenty of rocks that just require a quick scramble. Desert bushes and Joshua trees cover the area; lots of snags to be had if you crash! Bring your long spools of line, as we might be quite spread out depending on the terrain (touches on top of rocks 100 yards apart is likely). We’ll be camping in a group camp site, so bring your winter camping gear as it can get quite chilly. Folks not wanting to camp can get a room just outside of the park. Bring your cameras and your decorative single line kites as some good pictures can be had. If there is interest, in
