[Austin] Everyone is welcome to fly their kites or just enjoy the hundreds of kites in the air at the 82nd Annual Exchange Club Kite Festival at Zilker Park. This heritage event is attended by thousands from all over Central Texas and beyond.
The kite flying contest is for single line kites but every kind of kite is welcome. Categories include largest, smallest, highest angle, steadiest, most unusual, and strongest pulling. All ages are eligible to compete. See our web page for events and rules. Trophies are awarded to first, second, and third place winners. The oldest and youngest competitors win trophies, too. All kites entered must be home made. No pre-registration and it's free to enter. Sport kite, buggy, fighter kite, and other kite flying demonstrations will be held all day. David and Susan Gomberg are our special guests. Proceeds from vendor sales benefit local non-profit organizations working to break the cycle of child abuse. Come on down and enjoy “Kite Day” - an event that is uniquely "Austintatious". While you are here, enjoy the SXSW film festival, SXSW music festival, the Travis County Rodeo, and other spectacular spring happenings in the “Live Music Capital of the World”. [Long Beach] This will be an AKA sanctioned three day clinic in conjunction with RevGuild and the World Kite Museum, addressing individual, pairs and team Rev (quad) techniques for NOVICE through MASTER level pilots, led by 10-time national multi-line champion John Barresi, joined by his teammates on the professional sport kite performance team iQuad... While the obvious focus is on Revolutions for their superior flight characteristics and durability, instruction will happily be provided to anyone with a kite that has the essential quad- line flight characteristics such as hovering, reverse, forward, and sideways flight.
The very nature of Rev team flying is fun, relaxed, and very forgiving. So, if youʼre even the least bit curious, this is a premier opportunity to learn from one of the most experienced and prolific Rev pilots in the world. |

[Portland] In China, early April brings the Qingming Festival where people visit family graves to pay their respects and then celebrate rebirth by sailing kites skyward. The festival is also time for national and international kite flying competitions.
Lan Su brings a kite exhibit from three treasured sources: the Drachen Foundation, the Bob & Charlene Umbowers collection, and the Smithsonian. New this year is a display of kites so small that some could fit into matchboxes. Amazingly, all can fly! Back again are glorious large kites in shapes of butterflies, dragons, peacocks, hawks, sparrows, and a special whistling kite. The common Chinese word for kite is fengzhen, which translates to “wind zither” describing a Chinese love of noise-making kites. Kite making and coloring, Chinese story time, lectures about kite history, and a scavenger activity will keep individuals and families flurrying through the Garden like kite tails. As an urban setting is not the best place for kite flying, Flying Ribbon Dancers will entertain and encourage all to fly kites at the beach or the park. |
