[Spartanburg] This event will last five months with several area organizations and businesses participating. [Matthews] The Matthews Heritage Museum’s newest exhibit “Go Fly a Kite” will open on March 20th, the first day of spring. The exhibit will feature a variety of miniature kites, most of which were made by Jim Martin, a noted kite flyer and maker.
Most of us know the story of Ben Franklin’s experiment of flying a kite to determine if lighting was caused by electricity, but kites have been useful in other capacities. Kites were also instrumental in the research of the Wright brothers when developing the first airplane in the late 1800s.
Today we generally use kites as a source of recreation on a blustery March day. But to many it is a passion and a hobby. Kite flying is a worldwide sport, recreation, and pastime for thousands of people – from the very young to the eldest, in almost every culture. There are regular kite festivals celebrated annually.
Mr. Martin has been making many of his own kites for over a decade. He is best known for his kite arches and miniature kites. Jim’s miniature kites have won numerous awards and are very popular. He continues to work on new designs. In 2013 he participated in the Miniature Kite Challenge in Seaside, Oregon and placed first for “Best Flight”, second for “Most Beautiful” and third for smallest size. The exhibit will be on display to May 9th. Come celebrate national Kiting month (April) by stopping by the museum to see this interesting and timely exhibit!

[Vallejo] Bay breezes, grassy hills, and open fields make for ideal kite-flying conditions at Lynch Canyon Open Space Park’s 6th Annual Kite Festival on Saturday, May 3, from 11am to 4pm. All you need to bring are your kites and kin. All ages and ability levels are welcome. The festival is free and parking is only $5.

[MURPHY] NOTTELY RIVER VALLEY VINEYARDS, LLC celebrates National Kite Month on Fridays and Saturdays om April and the first weekend in May 2014. This is a fun fly for all. [Council Bluffs] Join us for a late afternoon kite fly at River’s Edge Park in Council Bluffs, Iowa. You can make your own kite, bring your own kite, see professional kite flyers fly unique kites from the exhibition, or purchase a kite at the festival. This is an opportunity to get outside and have fun with your family and friends while learning a bit about Lewis and Clark history in the Omaha-Council Bluffs area. There will be music, a bouncy house, a climbing wall as well as tipis, a drum circle and a keelboat, just like one the Lewis and Clark expedition used! It is fun for free- 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM. [Wheaton] NOW GO FLY A KITE! The Wheaton Park District, Gift of Wings, and the Kite Society of WI & IL are proud to present the 6th Annual Wheaton "GO FLY A KITE" Kite Festival, as part of the Tour De Kites. This event is planned for Saturday, MAY 3, 2014 in Graf Park from 10:00 am until 2:15 pm. In April 2010, in conjunction with Wheaton’s annual Celebration, Wheaton residents attempted to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the most kites flown simultaneously (967 kites). We had over 1,100 notarized registrants that day, and launched over 900 kites all at the same time. The families that came out for the event had a great time, so we are ready to “give it another try.” Flying for the 5th time, The World renowed Chicago Fire Kite Team, Dan Newman, Mike Delfar, O2, and Fire and Ice, and Elizabeth Gordon. The Wheaton Eye Clinic Kids Mad Dash will take place at 1:00pm and the Candy drop will take place between shows. Check this out! The Grand Launch will take place at 11:15. "The Toney" is one of the oldest events for the HKS. Come fly at the one of the best venues in the state -- the Academy of Model Aeronautics, known as the AMA. There will be a kite-making workshop for children ages 3-103. A Members Meeting will be held after the flying has finished to elect club officers and discuss club business. The club will also provide a meal for current club members.

[Waco] Free family event, fun fly, kite vendor, games, food vendors, live music, raffle, candy drop. All proceeds from this event remain in Central Texas to help hearing impaired children.

[Twin Falls] Community Kite Days are an annual fun family event at a large open field perfect for kite flying. We will have different activities including kite fighting. There will be fun activities for all ages, contests, and prizes. There will, also, be a food vendor at the Soccer Complex.

Join professional hang gliders, fans, and families at Jockey’s Ridge State Park for this Outer Banks tradition. This event is the longest running hang gliding competition in the world! The Hang Gliding Spectacular and Air Show will run from May 16th through May 19th with competitions each day. Sponsored by Maggiano’s Little Italy, Prairie Farms, B93.3, FM 102/1 and 1290 Martini Radio, Gift of Wings, and the Kite Society of Wisconsin and Illinois. Featured performers include Chicago Fire, The Windjammers, Fire & Ice, Josh and Zach Gordon, Dan Newman, Paul Koepke, Mike Delfar, Mrs Kite Lady Donna Schenk, and the Giant Kites of Yves Laforest flown by Alex and the Canadian Dream Team from Montreal, and Jean Lemire. You don’t want to miss this folks! The Family Kite Festival will be held in Veterans Park from 10 am until 6 pm on Saturday and 10 am until 5 pm on Sunday. The festival is free with plenty of free parking. The Fast Track Oil Centers Grand Launch of 600 kites will take place at noon. The Kaplan University Kids Mad Dash will take place at around 2:00 pm. [Victoria] Our inaugural festival features kite flyers from across the US and Canada, entertainment, a food village, a host of kid’s activities and more. Feature flyers include Connor Doran, Dale Ray and others! Our Clover Pt location is just minutes from downtown.

[Charleston SC] At 7:00 PM (depending on the weather and the breeze), about 6-8 artistic kites will be flown at Water Front Park.

[East Tawas] Our festival is centered around children and families. It is an open fly and everyone is welcome. There will be lots of giant kites and lots of stunt kites, too. There will be free kite making for the kids and lots of giveaways. We have candy drops, music, and fun. Come on up to East Tawas and fly a kite. Time is 10:00 until 6:00. There will be a night fly......weather permitting.
