In support of this mission, KiteFest brings together science and the arts in its celebration of one of the world’s most enduring media—kites. Kites have made significant contributions to the arts, science, mathematics, cultural awareness, and history. Kite flying and kite fliers, from Benjamin Franklin to Charlie Brown, are a constructive and quintessential part of American culture. Centuries before Marco Polo’s travels, kites helped form legends around the globe that have inspired the human spirit to soar.

This summer-long outdoor and indoor public art exhibition will create the excitement of a treasure hunt. Like CowParade Harrisburg 2004, KiteFest will celebrate the talents of local artists and involve the entire community, from residents and visitors to the businesses that sponsor them.

The “Mighty Kite Flight” is sponsored by Narnia Studios in Hendersonville in conjunction with the national celebration, National Kite Month. Hundreds of kite festivals are held throughout the country in the month of April according to official website, www.nationalkitemonth.org . The “Mighty Kite Flight” is the only sanctioned kite festival in Western North Carolina that participates.

At the “Mighty Kite Flight”, there will be demonstrations by experienced kite flyers as well as help for the novice. “Many of the more seasoned flyers will bring an array of unusual and complex kites to exhibit”, said Hughes.
